Technical characteristics of Artistic Media and Their Role in Disseminating Musical Sound

Imed Khasharem
Abstract

This study examines the technical characteristics of artistic media and their impact on the dissemination of musical sound through the lens of mediology. By exploring the evolution of media—from the acoustic sound era to analog recording technologies and digital innovations—the article highlights how each phase has reshaped musical creation, distribution, and consumption. The research considers a wide range of media including vinyl records, cassettes, CDs, digital streaming platforms, smartphones, and music production software. Drawing on mediological theory, particularly that of Régis Debray, the study investigates how these media not only transmit sound but also shape musical memory, taste, and culture. The analysis also emphasizes how modern digital tools democratize music production, enabling broader access and global distribution. Furthermore, the paper explores the educational and recreational uses of media in music, showing how new technologies enhance learning, creativity, and audience engagement. Ultimately, the research argues that artistic media—through their evolving technical characteristics—play a central role in transforming the musical experience, from intimate live performances to personalized digital listening. The conclusion raises critical questions about how these technologies influence sound aesthetics and proposes further exploration of their cultural and interactive implications.
